I didn’t think I’d ever been this super-charged. Dreamscape sex was no joke. I liked all my phoenix abilities, but I was growing more than a little partial to that one.

“Ryls? Are you paying attention?”

“Huh? What?” Wincing, I met Iolani’s smirk. “I’m sorry, I was a little distracted.”

Iolani rolled her eyes and fake gagged. “The sooner you focus, the sooner you’ll be back with your mates, rather than having to daydream about them.”

“I wasn’t—” I protested.

“You were.” Traitor—I mean, Trevor—smirked.

“You’re lucky you’re pretty,” I hissed at him.

Trevor caught my hand and placed a soft kiss on my palm. Any irritation I might have felt melted away.

“I love you,” I whispered, knowing something could go wrong and these might be our last few moments together.

“Not nearly as much as I love you. Whatever happens, our time together has been the best part of my life.” Ducking his head down, he caught my lips in a kiss that caused my legs to wobble.

“Trevor, she’s already vibrating with enough energy to be unstable. If you charge her up any more, she may go nuclear,” Iolani scolded him.

Blushing, I pulled away. Trevor hooked his finger under my chin, tilting my head up for one last toe-curling kiss.

When he finally moved away, it took me a minute to focus on what Iolani was saying. We were standing in the middle of the desolate, ash-covered crash pad. It was just as creepy as it had been the first time I’d laid eyes on it.

“We are about ready to start. As soon as the rest of the phoenixes arrive…” The queen looked over my shoulder. “There they are now. We can get started.”

Straightening my shoulders, I stepped beside her. “What do you need me to do?”

To my horror, Iolani shrugged. “Honestly, Ryls? I need you to do what you do best. No one has ever done this before, but you’ve proven that with enough determination and power, you can do almost anything you want. We’re here to supply the additional power, but it will be up to you to figure out how to use it.”

My blood pressure spiked. “Mother-loving McFluffernutter! Are you saying the plan is for me to figure this out on the spot?” I had to have misunderstood.

“Well, yes.” Iolani gave me a ghost of a smile.

They didn’t have a plan.

Right then, I’d have given all my abilities—except the sleepy-time-sex one—to have a pair of magical ruby slippers I could click together.

Iolani was under the impression I was a crazy powerful phoenix, but did she know I’d taken out a plane over a spider? Or that I’d died playing mini-golf? Or that I’d been assassinated by a ninja-beetle?

Iolani met my eyes. Hers held a calm confidence in my abilities… something I certainly didn’t possess.

Yep.

We’re all going to die.

Again.

I opened my mouth to inform her of our impending demise, but she’d turned her attention to the six red-robed women who moved to create a circle around us.

“Are they about to sacrifice us?” Trevor whispered against my ear.
