Maia was dreaming. She floated in a pleasant landscape full of fluffy clouds and luxurious sunbeams, her pain a distant memory. Soft, downy feathers brushed her fingers as she floated, with her eyes shut against the soft peach light that surrounded her like an endless sea, more relaxed than she’d ever been. She was part of the sky—she was the sky, as essential as the clouds that glided beside her, as vital as the gentle winds that swirled around her.

No agony reached her wings here, just gentle, soothing touches, no fear gripped her heart, no urgency beat at her chest. She was safe … soothed.

Where is he? a delicate, feminine voice asked, like music caressing Maia’s ears. Where’s the wolf, little dove?

Maia floated through the clouds, but a wrinkle formed between her brows. The wolf…?

I know he’s inside one of your little group, the female murmured, as gentle and comforting as a mother. So which one is he? The rebel, the prince, or the whore?

A pulse of … something went through Maia’s heart at the words, but her thoughts were too airy and light for her to process the strong emotion, and by then it had already drifted away, carried on the sweet-smelling wind.

Or has he been reborn as a woman, like me? Is it the healer? The warrior? She paused, a soft laugh ruffling the hair by Maia’s cheek. No, those two are straightforward. The Saviour and the Shield. Of course they are. But which one is it, hmm? The dashing rebel, or the sweet courtesan?

What…?

The clouds drifting by Maia pressed closer, like eager cats winding around her ankles. But when she took too long to respond, the long tails of clouds wrapped around her chest, gripping tight enough to restrict her breathing. Maia’s eyes flew open in shock as her arms snapped tight to her sides, thick cords of downy cloud wrapping around her from ankle to throat and gripping tight enough to choke off her air.

Where is he, little dove? The woman spat, her voice nothing like the gentle, mothering tone of a few moments ago.

I … I don’t know! Maia screamed inside her head, trying to prise her mouth open. But she was frozen stiff, only her mind able to run. She knew what was coming, knew the iron would pierce her wing and scatter any sanity she’d ever had, but no amount of thrashing convinced her body to move. She was completely paralysed by the downy clouds wrapped around her.

It was impossible—clouds weren’t this strong—but the presence of the woman, the sheer power radiating around Maia… That power had never learned the meaning of the word impossible.

Tell me! The woman screamed, loud enough that Maia’s ears rang and pain struck her head like a thunderbolt.

This woman, wherever and whoever she was, wanted to know about Az and Jaro, and while Maia had no fucking clue what she was talking about, she refused to give up anything about them.

No, she snarled, throwing her gaze around the cloudscape in a dazed panic.
