Chapter 8

Kip sat on the deck of the hotel room, completely oblivious to the cold, watching the snow coming down to the hotel lawn. His mother was dead. Not sure how he felt about that, he just sat there thinking of all the times that he’d wished her so. Kip didn’t have any love for his family, but knowing that she’d taken her own life, he did wonder why she’d done it.

“Are you all right?” Kip took Dalton’s hand into his and held it when she spoke. “I didn’t think she’d been doing the work for all that long. Steven said that she told him she could no longer do that sort of work.”

“She’d been doing it for less than two days. Not nearly long enough for her to have gotten the hang of it, much less sick of the job.” Dalton told him what else she’d heard from the job site. That his mom had thought that she’d be done at the end of the day and free to go. “Yes, Danburn told me about it. I guess she thought she was above all that. Father said that it was my fault too.”

“Of course he did. Did you hear that he had to go and see to a wound that was on his leg before going back to work? Denny, the foreman, said that it was self-inflicted, and that Steven only needed to shift and it would have been okay. I guess he refused in the event that there was something in the mud that would ruin his body. Whatever that meant.” Kip laughed when Dalton snorted about his father. “Also, Bethany has been given the rest of the day off to deal with her pain. It sounded to me like she was more pissed off at her mother than grieving over her dying. She’s to pick up the extra work from her parents. I guess that isn’t going over well.”

“No, it wouldn’t.” Kip got up when Dalton did. “I guess we should go inside. Sitting out here isn’t going to help me to understand what was going through her head when she slipped into the slide.”

“No. More than likely no one will ever understand why she did it.”

As soon as they entered the hotel room, Danburn was there. He’d said that he was coming to their room to talk, but not about what.

After having room service bring them some drinks and a tray of scones hot from the oven, Danburn said that he needed to talk to Dalton, but he wanted Kip to be there. After he finished off nearly all the scones and cold tea, he leaned back and looked at Dalton.

“I don’t know that this is a good idea or not, but it’s already done and you have to deal with it.” In that moment, Kip knew what was going on. He smiled when he thought of what Dalton might say to them when she figured it out. “You’re going to have to come to me and pledge yourself to me.
