“You’re making a big mistake,” Ammo repeats for the fifth time. I keep my back to her, kneeling on the ground and waiting for the walls to open back up. They can’t stay closed forever because they’re the only way out of here and if they don’t open soon, Ammo will probably start another blood bath. Backers can’t support their favorite Mutes if there’s none left. I was surprised she defended me from Talon after I openly attacked the bitch for what she did to Ghost but that doesn’t mean I’m going anywhere with her. That Mute is not the one I used to know. The labyrinth’s trail runs have changed her, just like the guys who have splintered and stolen pieces of my heart have changed me.

There’s a deep rumble beneath my fingers as I pathetically try to pry the walls apart, and as if by magic, they begin to open. The metal spikes inside have retracted, allowing me to dart between them as soon as they are wide enough. Ghost wasn’t the only one who got caught in the crosshairs of the speared trap. Chunks of flesh, organs and brain matter smearing the walls slowly trickle down and leave a slimy mess across the ground. My chest squeezes and the tears begin to fall again as I hunt for evidence Ghost is really gone. I know I shouldn’t, that I’ll never be able to scrub the sight from my mind, but I push on regardless.

I scramble right up to the last point I saw him, frozen in place and panicked. His white eyes locked with mine as he took his last breath. But as I scan the area, there’s nothing to imply he was here. No white hair, no tattooed patches of skin, no swatches of dark jeans. Even Ammo grunts in confusion as she catches up and tries to pull me beneath her arm again.

“Get the fuck off me!” I yell, shoving her away. She has the audacity to look hurt as Firefly approaches, his glow illuminating our tense stare-off.

“Just come back to the hideout. We need you for what tomorrow brings,” she starts but I’m already shaking my head and backing away. I don’t want to hear it. Without any reason to stay and nothing of Ghost’s to tie me here, I start running as fast as my shaky legs will carry me. Tears sting my eyes and my feet are late to respond to each uneven slab in the ground, but I don’t stop.

“You’ll never survive the night in one piece!” Ammo calls out, causing my breath to labour harder. I keep going, aware of a drone buzzing behind me until I turn a sharp corner and hunch over to dry retch. Pain slices along my spine with each heave, yet every time I close my eyes and picture the clumps of discarded skin or intestines in the next alleyway, I retch again. Maybe Ghost’s traits were too shredded or covered in blood to recognize.
