Just Go

We see that the angel of the Lord’s response to Gideon’s questions of why skipped right over it with a charge: “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” (v. 14). A summary of the conversation could look like this:

Angel: “Hello, valiant warrior.”

Gideon: “Why is my life so bad? Why is my nation in turmoil? Everything is a mess. God has left us on our own!”

Angel: “Go fix it.”

The angel’s reply boils down to one word. Go . Go simply means to move, proceed—to head out in a certain direction . It definitely doesn’t mean to stay, remain, and vent about how bad things have been or are now. The angel responded to Gideon’s cry for an answer with a command. And like a parent, for emphasis he added, “Have I not sent you?” In other words, do something about the problem.

But as we often do at times, Gideon remained confused. He pushed back with even more questions and concerns:

How can I go?

Who am I to do anything?

My family is unimportant.

I’m the youngest son of an unimportant family.

Essentially, he said, “Pick someone else. This is too big for me.” Obviously, Gideon didn’t want to go. His response reveals that. But God wasn’t about to hear it. He had told Gideon to go, so He sought to strengthen him to help him do so. He assured Gideon that he would not be going alone. “Surely I will be with you,” the angel of the Lord voiced clearly, “and you shall defeat Midian as one man” (v. 16).

Gideon needed the reminder that with God, your lineage, standing, and position don’t matter. All that matters is who goes with you. It’s a simple spiritual point but one we often gloss over to our own detriment. The key to accomplishing any impossible task is the presence of the Lord with you. It doesn’t depend on your expertise or lack thereof. It doesn’t even depend on your strength. Your strategy is no match for God’s, so you might as well table it and follow Him. Spiritual success in spiritual war depends entirely upon spiritual solutions. Spiritual solutions take place if, and when, God goes before you or with you. That determines your outcome. We see this principle play out time and again in Scripture:

Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here.”

Exodus 33:15

“The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

Deuteronomy 31:8

“I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars.”

Isaiah 45:2

“It shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall act promptly, for then the LORD will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.
