SERVANTHOOD

SCRIPTURE READING: 2 CORINTHIANS 4:5

You are here to serve and bring good to those around you—whether that’s our family, your baby sister, your friends, your teachers, or people you don’t know who live halfway around the world. Doing good works for God is one reason you’re here on this earth, and it’s why you were created in the first place.

Service isn’t based on feelings. It’s based on simply doing what you were put here to do. You shouldn’t serve only when you feel like it. When you serve with a right attitude, you expect nothing in return. You serve so God might be glorified and others can benefit. Doing something for someone else and then expecting something in return is called business, not service. While there’s nothing wrong with doing business, you need to understand the difference. It’s service only when something is done to glorify God and freely help someone else.

No matter how small or how big the action, when it’s accompanied by the right spirit of service, God takes notice. He has created you for a life of greatness, and that greatness comes by walking the path of service.

For our Fun Friday activity, we’ll write each of our names on a piece of paper and put the names in a bowl. Then we’ll pass the bowl around and let everyone draw a name. If you draw your own name, put the paper back in the bowl and draw again. Be sure not to let anyone see whose name you got. (If any family members can’t read, help them.) This family member will be your “secret service” person. You’ll do things in secret that will help him or her.

After secretly serving for a week, we’ll get back together as a family and share who drew whose name. Share which secret services each family member did and how each one felt about it. Have fun serving. And serve well.
