Chapter Eight

“I swear to the Heavens, I’m about to start singin’ The Party’s Over and standing with the front door open.”

Chuckling with such glee that her shoulder bounced up and down, Rene couldn’t help but kiss the special spot behind her ear and whisper, “Or, I’ll just take you to bed and these assholes can fend for themselves.”

“Rene!” She gasped, her smile so bright and so beautiful Rene thanked the Universe for about the hundredth time. Getting control way quicker than he liked, she went on as she patted his shoulder, “Come on out and have some apple pie and ice cream. I promise to get rid of everybody after dessert.”

“I’m holding you to that promise, Priscilla Angel…”

“Don’t say it,” she growled over her shoulder, adding a wave of magic that slapped him on the ass for added incentive.

Good Heavens and then some, he loved that woman more than he knew it was possible to love another person. There was no doubt in his mind that he’d follow her to the ends of the Earth and then some, all she had to do was ask.

Sitting down just as Max jokingly complained, “You think you had it bad? I ran all through the Swamp in a full coat of fur.”

“And we’re damned glad you came to the rescue,” Cilla reassured, kissing the Panther’s cheek which made Rene growl in jealousy and everyone else in the room burst out laughing.

“Rescue?” Ike questioned with a wink and a grin. “I didn’t see no mangy cat coming to the rescue. I was laying there bleeding like a stuck pig and y’all two…” He motioned with his fork between Cilla and Rene. “…were playing kissy face. I coulda bled to death and y’all woulda just had hickeys.”

Laughing so hard he damned near choked on his pie, Rene couldn’t help but tease, “Just like you after the Junior Prom.” Wrapping his arm around Cilla’s waist and pulling her into his lap, he went on, “Wasn’t that Evelyn Whiteside? Head cheerleader, drum majorette, and Hickey Hoover Lips?”

“Aww, now, that just ain’t right,” Ike groused before busting out laughing just like the rest.

The sound of the doorbell had Cilla excusing herself and Rene following after. Standing to the side, his heart skipped a beat as he laid eyes on Jon Thomas standing hand-in-hand with Abigail and Jasper and Mary Lou right behind. Cilla’s counter-spell had worked. His miraculous Mate had brought them all back from the dead and rejoin their Spirits with their bodies.

Grabbing Jon Thomas’ outstretched hand, the older Guardsman pulled his nephew in for a back-slapping hug before finally being able to say, “Damn, it’s good to see ya’, Kid. Good to see y’all.” Looking at the girls and Jasper, Rene leveled his stare before sternly warning, “Y’all stay outta trouble, ya’ here?”

“Yes, Sir,” the younger Shifters answered in unison and Cilla followed up with, “Y’all want some pie and ice cream.”

Thankfully Jon Thomas almost immediately answered, “No, thank you, Ma’am. We got to get out to the farm.
