Chapter 8

Mary awakened to sunshine drifting in through the hospital window in her room. Good grief, she felt as if she’d been run over by a truck...a very big truck. Every bone and muscle in her body hurt, but ultimately, she welcomed the pain. It told her she was alive.

She’d definitely thought she was going to die last night. When her car left the road and began to roll, up became down and down became up, and she’d truly believed she was going to be killed. It had been the most terrifying thing she’d ever been through.

She released a shuddery breath and closed her eyes once again. She was incredibly lucky. When the car had finally come to rest, her door was crushed closed, but she’d managed to crawl out of her broken window.

Immediately, she’d gotten out of the car and walked toward the road. She had no idea where her purse with her cell phone was in the car to call for help. She’d sat in the middle of the road, hoping and praying that somebody who could help her would appear.

Thankfully, Clive Burns had come along and had not only called Dallas, but he’d also insisted she sit in his car until help came.

She now opened her eyes at the sound of somebody entering her room. It was Amber James, one of the nurses. Mary knew her because the two had gone to high school together.

“Hi, Mary,” Amber said with a bright smile. She was a pretty woman with shoulder-length brown hair and blue eyes. “How’s our patient this morning?”

“Bones and muscles I didn’t know I possessed are now screaming,” Mary replied.

Amber smiled sympathetically. “I’m so sorry, Mary. But, according to what I heard, you are a very lucky woman.”

“That, I agree with.”

“You’re also in luck because I have orders to give you something to help you with your pain. I’m just going to put it in your IV, and you should feel some relief within minutes,” Amber said. “But before I do that, I need to get your vitals.”

A few minutes later, Amber was gone, and as the pain relief took hold, Mary drifted back to sleep. She awakened again when breakfast arrived, followed closely by Dr. Erickson.

“Good morning, Mary,” he said. “I’ll bet you’re feeling a bit rough today.”

She smiled. “That’s an understatement. Although, whatever Amber gave me earlier helped some.”

“My shift is ending, so I wanted to let you know that you’ll be in good hands with Dr. Reeves. I’ve caught him up on everything that’s happened, and he should be in to see you later this morning.”

“Can I go home today?” she asked.

“I see no reason why you can’t be released later today,” he said. “I’ll make sure we send you home with a prescription for some pain pills. You’re going to need to take it easy for a few days. You have been through a trauma. And all this is only if Dr. Reeves is in agreement.”

She nodded. Thank goodness it was Sunday, her day off.
