Stephen Evans notes that in the earlier translation by David Swenson (Princeton: Prince­ton University Press, 1962), the issue is about teaching and learning the “Truth.” “The Truth here is closer to what religions have usually termed salvation, and it is also closely related to what Climacus calls the attainment of an ‘eternal consciousness’ on the title page, and an ‘eternal happiness’ at other places in the book.” Evans, Passionate Reason: Making Sense of Kierkegaard’s “Philosophical Fragments” (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1992), pp. 13 and 27. My treatment of Fragments will be highly selective. Evans’s volume is a very helpful full commentary.
