Once we got inside the house, Daniel set about making tea for himself and I wandered over to the Keurig.

“You want some coffee?” I asked the chief.

“Sure,” he answered, settling his bulk into a kitchen chair.

“How do you take it?”

“Three sugars and milk.”

I nodded and brewed a big mug for him, adding milk and sugar before I carried the cup to the table.

I got the sense they wanted to talk alone, but I was dying to know exactly what was going on, so I said, “I’m hungry. I’m going to make some breakfast. Do y’all want anything?”

Garrett’s eyes lit up. “Sure. I could eat.”

Daniel shot him a narrow look before he glanced at me. “That sounds good. Thanks, Cari.”

I brewed myself a cup of coffee and turned on the oven. I might have exaggerated when I told Daniel I always set off the smoke alarm when I made bacon. I figured out that it didn’t happen as often if I baked it on a sheet pan. Also, I figured the chief would put away a ton of food because it would take thousands of calories every day to maintain his huge form.

I pretended I wasn’t listening as Daniel and Garrett continued their conversation.

“I’m guessing Leona didn’t come by your office for your little talk,” Daniel said before he sipped his tea.

“You’d be right,” Garrett answered. “She dropped by the house last night after dark.”

Daniel sighed but didn’t say anything else, waiting for the police chief to continue.

“After she sneered at my living room, she perched her snooty ass on my sofa and proceeded to offer me a carefully worded bribe.”

Daniel snorted.

That ghost of a smirk reappeared on Garrett’s face. “Yeah, nothing that would stick if I recorded the conversation and tried to charge her, but it was clear that she would make my life a lot easier if I just played along.”

“Did you agree to play along?”

The police chief just stared at Daniel. “What do you think?” he finally asked.

Daniel nodded. “I didn’t figure you’d do it, but I did wonder if you agreed to just get her off your back.”

“Yeah, I thought about it, but I can’t stand her, so I told her to shove it and never come to my house again.”

I chuckled under my breath as I slid the sheet pan of bacon into the oven.

“And?” Daniel asked.

“She told me I was making a poor decision and stomped out of my house.” Garrett sighed. “She reminded me of my first-grade teacher. She was a witch.”

I wondered if he meant literally or figuratively since we were in a town full of supernatural beings, but kept my mouth shut because I didn’t want to interrupt their conversation.

Daniel echoed Garrett’s sigh. “How big of a problem is she going to be?”

The police chief didn’t say anything, so I glanced over my shoulder and saw that he was looking at Daniel as though he should already know the answer.

“Fuck,” Daniel groaned.

I smiled to myself as I moved to the fridge to get eggs, peppers, and cheese.
