Chapter Twelve

Tuesday morning, Tris hated having to go back to work, but they couldn’t exactly spend the entire day snuggling in bed. Not to mention that she kept wanting to move things forward physically with him even though they’d agreed to take things slow. Being in bed with him was a lowkey torture, so it was just easier to get up and go about the day.

She watched Khyle search through one of the suitcases. He’d unpacked a few things, but since there wasn’t much space in the partitioned-off bed area, he hadn’t been able to take all of his things out. “I can unpack for you,” she offered.

“That’s sweet, but you don’t have to. I’ll try to get to it tonight.”

The bedroom area of the apartment—behind the screen—had a small dresser, nightstand, and bed. She hadn’t gotten to put away her new things yet, either, and she wasn’t honestly sure if she could fit all her things plus his in the dresser.

“We really need a closet,” she said with a sigh.

“Definitely. That’s something I can build for us so we can share it.”

“I’d love that.”

He looked at his phone and stood with a belt in his hand. “I’ve gotta run; Dad’s outside waiting. See you at dinner, sweetheart.”

“Have a good day,” she said, giving him a quick kiss.

“You too.” He gave her a smile that made her go all warm inside and disappeared out the door.

She looked around the space, very tempted to unpack his things. But since he was going to get something for storage, it was probably best to wait. She took a little time to clean up the kitchen from breakfast and make the bed, and then she put on tennis shoes and headed outside. After collecting eggs, she fed the animals, picked apples, and walked into the farmhouse.

Crew was sitting at the kitchen table when she set the two baskets on the counter. A laptop was open and he was writing in a notebook.

“Morning,” she said.

He didn’t look up, not saying anything until he’d finished writing. Then he sat back with a sigh. “Good morning, Tris. How was your date last night?”

“Amazing.”

“The ziti was great, by the way. Did you make the sauce?”

“Yep.” She’d left them a baked ziti casserole and rolls for dinner. She was glad it was a hit.

“We could bottle and sell it. It’s that good.”

“Aw. I don’t can it. I make it fresh.”

“I think the park has canning supplies. I’m pretty sure Dani mentioned that the bears are cooks and they make their own pickles and sauces. I’m sure you could use their equipment if you were interested in giving it a try.”

“Maybe in the future. Right now, I’m happy to be getting the house organized and feeding you four.”

“Six of us now, with you and Khyle.”

“True.”

“Would you guys like to have dinner with us?”

“Tonight?”

“Yeah, but also any night you’d like to. I’d love to have herd dinners. We have dinner one night a week at Dexter’s, but I was thinking it would be cool to have dinner together as a group too.
