It took him two days to come downstairs. He was able to get a shower, and he’d been given a fresh change of pants, but he still didn’t feel like himself. Most of the time he’d lain in the bed as a cougar and thought about the man he’d killed. It had been an accident, and he’d been defending himself. The guy had shoved him first. Kenai couldn’t have known there was a ledge there. They were all such reasonable thoughts, but they didn’t do anything to make his guilt go away.

He’d missed meals. That was the driving need for him to come out of the office that had been converted into a makeshift bedroom for whatever Watcher had first used it. Wild was decades older than he, so it really could have been anyone. He didn’t think too much about it as he came plodding down the old wooden stairs in his bare feet and went straight to the end of the bar away from everyone else that was already crowded around the dance floor and along the bar.

“Hi,” the bartender said. He stayed back, and Kenai sighed. Of course this guy would know who he was. No more being anonymous Kenai like he had been with Derek. He was a Watcher. And shifters gave them a certain amount of respect, whether they deserved it or not.

“Hey. Can I have a...” He was going to say a screwdriver, but he’d already downed a bottle of vodka in just a few days with no food in his system. Maybe it was time to give his liver a break. “Soda? And a bacon cheeseburger very rare with no vegetables on it?”

The bartender smirked at him. “Sure. I know who you are, but no one told me what kind of a predator you are.”

His order had made his predatory status pretty clear. “Mountain lion.”

The guy’s eyes widened, and Kenai figured he was probably talking to someone who was a predator too, but not as big as a cougar. The bartender got him his drink while he was trying to figure out what he was. Not a bear. He didn’t have the bulk or the coloring for it. Not prey, either. He was too assertive. The prey species were always meek around him before he even said anything.

“Okay, I give up. What are you?”

The bartender grinned at him. “Been trying to figure that out?”

Kenai nodded. “Yes. You’re not a bear, or anything that’s prey. Not an otter, either. You’re too big to be one of those. You’re not a cougar, because I’d know my own kind. I don’t think you’re a cat at all. So what are you?”

“Golden eagle. And you didn’t have to go through all that trouble. You could have just asked. I’ve heard you don’t get out much, but it is okay to ask that here.”

Kenai blushed. He would have gotten to eagle eventually, but it was nice to know that he’d been right about the rest of it. He kept his head down and drank his soda while he waited for his burger.
