Four

Once she identified herself, the doorman let her in just as Dalton had said he would. She took the elevator to the eighth floor and approached Dalton’s door with a mixture of nerves and excitement. She knocked, but no one answered. He’d told her it would be open, so she let herself in.

“Dalton?” she called as she wandered further into the living room. “Are you here?”

The two computers were still on the dining table and as she neared, she saw a note lying on the keyboard.

Help yourself to anything. There’s soda in the fridge and coffee packets next to the expresso machine.

She picked up the note and her heart sank. She should have figured he wouldn’t be there. Why else would he tell her the door would be open? Disappointment rushed through her. She went over to the windows and gazed out upon the city. It was turning colder each day, and she spotted one tree whose leaves were starting to turn. The longer she stood there observing, the more the cold seemed to sink into her heart as well.

She needed to face facts—she had fallen for Dalton Storm. Hard. But he didn’t seem to have fallen for her.

She moved from the window and returned to the table. She sat before the computer and began to input the data. She finished one page and flipped it over, and then she noticed something. Checking again, she was sure of it. Her stack was higher than the day before. He’d added more pages.

But, why?

She sighed. He had effectively increased her “favor” load. Irritation surged through her. Enough was enough. She wasn’t going to do this forever. She shuffled the pages, taking off the amount she figured he’d added.

She would finish the original stack and that was all.

Completely annoyed now, she bent her head toward the computer and put herself into high gear. She was going to finish up and quickly, and then she was going to walk out of Dalton’s world forever. The whole set-up had been stupid from the beginning anyway. And the annoyance she felt wasn’t toward Dalton, but toward herself.

She needed to get her priorities back in order.

As she clipped through the pages, her determination to remain in the United States increased with each word. She wasn’t about to give up. She’d take notes for that girl, she’d grovel in the financial aid office, she’d fill out every possible form she could to get any scholarship, no matter how miniscule.

But she was staying. Oh yes, she was staying.

****

Two and a half hours had passed by the time she completed the last page, and still no sign of Dalton. Frankly, she was relieved. She’d convinced herself that her feelings for him were just a flight of fancy. Nothing real. And certainly nothing permanent.

She stood from the table and stretched, trying to work the kinks out of her back. She slipped on her jacket and put on her backpack. She gave one last glance around the room, and then temptation reared.

One little peek, she told herself.
