Chapter 10: In the Morning Light – Jenny

When I open my eyes, it’s still dark out. My phone’s in the living room, with my bag and clothes, so there’s no telling what time it is. Trevor is asleep beside me, his powerful chest rising and falling with peaceful breaths. His strong arms still embrace me loosely. My gaze travels down his body; I find myself tempted to wake him and attack him anew, but I force myself to let him sleep. It isn’t easy. I begin replaying the entire night, lingering longest on our time here in the penthouse. That moment when he undressed me, lifting and pinning me against the wall…carrying me to the bed… his chiseled body, standing over me, as he took off his belt…that look in his eyes…and, most of all, what followed. My hand, of its own accord, wanders my skin.

If I keep this up, I won’t be able to stop myself from rousing him. I force myself to end the reminiscence. As a result of the intensity of my fantasizing, I’m now wide awake. I look around, taking in the master bedroom for the first time. We’re lying among delectably soft linens, on a king-sized bed that takes center stage, radiating indulgent comfort. The rest of the space is adorned with tasteful touches and carefully selected artwork adorning the walls, just as in the other rooms. The open door to the en suite bathroom reveals a sanctuary of relaxation, with a deep soaking tub, a rain shower, and sleek, modern fixtures. Like the rest of the penthouse, all of this exudes an air of refined luxury and contemporary design, a testament to Trevor’s success in the tech world. Being here with him, in his lavish haven, I feel an urge to explore further the physical space, just as I felt the urge to wake him and explore our connection. But I remain in bed, fearing to wake him if I get up. Continuing the appraisal of my surroundings, my gaze falls on Trevor’s bedside table directly beside me, and my breath catches.

There it is. The iPad. The one with “everything on it,” he’d said. “The stuff that people would kill to know. Like those journalists…”

Little does he know that he’s now naked in bed with one of those very journalists. Before I’ve made a conscious decision, my hand is already moving to pick up the iPad. I hesitate, painfully aware that what I’m about to do will be an epic betrayal. But this is it, this is the whole reason I’m here, I remind myself. The thought rings hollow in the wake of our unexpected connection—in the wake of last night.

Still, I decide to go for it. After all, even if I find something, it wouldn’t necessarily mean I’ll have to do anything with what I find. Just then, at the thought of what I might find, I remember all the things they say about him: As heartbreaking as it is, I haven’t even met the real Trevor Dalton.
