Chapter Thirteen

Nicky

I listened from the doorway as Manuel passed Juliard off to Leo. He didn’t say anything about what I told him, and Leo didn’t ask why we needed a babysitter in the middle of the night. It stung that Juliard was leaving the house even for a short while. It was like I even let the baby down now.

Manuel stood in the doorway of the bedroom for a long second after locking the house back up. I sat on the edge of the bed, but inside me, my wolf was small and hiding, and I felt as if Manuel was a judge about to pass down his judgment upon my head.

In a few strides, he covered the distance between the door and me. His feet were silent on the carpet. He dropped to his knees and buried his face into my bare belly. I wrapped my arms around him as if his presence guarded all my most vulnerable bits.

Hot tears streaked my cheeks, and I ran my fingers through his hair. The man who planned to kill himself had come back to even hurt Manuel.

“Okay, we need to talk about this,” he said. “I know you don’t want to. You haven’t even told your therapist---”

“This isn’t yours to carry,” I shook my head as he looked up at me.

“Yeah. It is,” he nodded. “It is because I’m who you got. I’m the one you told, and I’m the one who plans to spend the rest of his life with you even if I have to make it a weekly routine to drain my claiming gland. So, you’re stuck with me, and since I’m the one you felt comfortable enough to tell, we’ll work through it, Nicky. I only need to know that if you ever feel that way again – for any reason – even if you think it’s a dumb reason – you gotta tell me. Like right when you start feeling that way. There’s a lot I can handle in life, but not that. Not losing you.”

“I don’t feel like that anymore,” I said, and it was true.

“I’m glad,” he nodded.

“Did you send Juliard away because you think I’m crazy?” I asked, hanging my head.

He cupped my chin and lifted my face until I met his gaze. “No. We have to have space to process this, and we need that space to be shouting-friendly if it happens.”

“I was hungry,” I said. “That’s such a stupid thing to say about everything that happened. You know how it was, though. It was just a lean time, and I started skipping dinner so that my brothers could share my food. Maybe that messed with my head, but every day the situation got worse, and more people were killed or attacked, or taken. I didn’t want that. I didn’t want any of that anymore, and so I decided that I wouldn’t have it. I figured my parents and brothers would have more food at every meal – not just dinner. Maybe that would give them enough fuel to survive until rescue came to our part of the hellscape.
