Chapter 7

Hunter

I pulled the lasagna out of the small oven and put it on the table. Amber sat there in her gorgeous pink-and-green-swirled dress, eyeing the garlic bread with hunger in her eyes. A woman who loved food just as much as I did. I wasn’t sure Amber could get any more perfect. I set the lasagna down and walked over to the small refrigerator, pulling out the salad I’d whipped up. I grabbed the salad dressings and a couple of sodas, then made my way back to the table.

“Do you usually make such elaborate meals?” she asked.

“Nope. I do not. I made this especially for you,” I said.

“But we didn’t make firm plans. How did you know to cook for me?”

“I don’t give up when I find something I want. I knew I could get you to cave.”

I set everything down onto the table and winked, watching as that beautiful blush rose in her cheeks.

I’d never get tired of seeing it.

“Well, aren’t you just a confident one,” she said, giggling.

“Takes one to know one,” I said.

“I’m hardly confident, thank you very much.”

“Your confidence is just channeled differently. But, yes. You are very confident.”

“How do you figure?”

I sat down in my chair across from her and grinned.

“For one, the way you hold yourself. Despite looking at your feet sometimes, you always have a straight back. Strong strides. Squared-off shoulders. All of that reeks of confidence. It’s just not a personal confidence,” I said.

“Then, what kind of confidence is it?”

I dished her up a square of lasagna before I smiled brightly.

“It’s a circumstantial kind of confidence,” I said.

“I don’t even know what that means.”

“It means you might not have confidence in your actions, but you have confidence in your ability to control the circumstances around you. The easiest way to put it would be if someone tried to get you to do something you didn’t want to do; you’d have no issues putting them in their place with that fire burning in your eyes.”

She held my gaze for a long time before I picked up the garlic bread.

“Would you like a piece?” I asked.

“You can tell all of that just by how I hold myself?”

We finished dishing up our plates before I opened up her soda for her.

“Yes, I can,” I said plainly.

“Well, I’m certainly not that talented when it comes to people.”

“Nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is a people person. But you do owe me an answer.”

She paused. “To what?”

“You asked me what I was doing with my life and if I enjoyed it. You never answered your own question back.”

“Funny, I don’t remember you asking.”

I smiled. “I’m asking now.”

She picked up her soda and took a sip before nodding her head.

“I’m in college right now. Studying literature. I’ve always loved to read, and to be able to turn something like that into a career is a dream of mine,” Amber said.

“Have you always enjoyed reading?”

“Ever since I was a little girl. I enjoy the worlds I can escape to.
