Chapter Eight

Over the next couple of days, Ryan and I didn’t see much of each other outside of work. I needed a few days to try to make real sense of the witch thing, and as much as I wanted his company, I thought it was something I needed to do alone. Callie, who was supposed to be guiding me, ended up being as helpful as an instruction manual in a language I didn’t understand. Any time I asked specific questions, all she gave me were vague, cryptic answers. The only time I could get a straight ‘yes’ or ‘no’ was when I asked her if she wanted food or water.

I’d tried asking about who or what would come after me (like my mom wrote about in the letter), but Callie just said there were ‘forces’ that would want me, my powers, and my sisters. Which was another subject Callie wouldn’t give details on. She wouldn’t—or couldn’t—tell me anything about my sisters, and only said we’d find each other when we needed to find each other.

Three days into this witch thing, and I knew as much as I had on day one, which was practically nothing.

I stared at Callie who was sitting across from me on the kitchen table. “You’re supposed to help, right? That’s what Familiars do?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

“Then why is frustration the only thing you’re familiarizing me with?”

Something that sounded suspiciously like a snort escaped her. “We guide. We can’t give you every answer to every question. It’s a journey, Topaz. Life isn’t mapped out for you, so why would you expect witchcraft to be? It’s not a job that has a checklist you can go by. You don’t clock in at eight, do your work, and then clock out at three. It’s a part of you. I can’t tell you what it means to you or for you, anymore than I can tell you what kind of person you are or want to be. It’s your decision. Even if it looks like every person is traveling the same road, they’re all different. The same goes for witches and witchcraft. They decide their journeys.”

“I’m not looking for a map,” I argued, though I wasn’t sure that was entirely true. “I’m looking for a…starting point.”

“And you’ve already gotten it. The day you discovered you were a witch and cast that spell, that was your starting point. It’s up to you where you go from here.”

I glared at her now. “I should’ve named you CC, for Cryptic Cat. Or maybe Pima, for Pain in my a—” I broke off as my cell rang. I made no move to get my phone, only continued to sit, glaring at Callie. She glared right back at me.

As I got up and went to answer my phone, I heard her mutter ‘saved by the cell’ under her breath.

“This conversation’s not over,” I said, grabbing my phone off the end table in the living room.

Callie swished her tail, then jumped off the table and ran for my room.
