"Get back here," Flynn bellowed, racing across the yard.

Chipper ran in front of him, tail wagging at the speed of light. The black lab's mouth was tightly clenched around the brim of Flynn's cowboy hat, drooling flying everywhere. The faster Flynn pounded after him, the quicker Chipper would make his little legs fly.

Kari sat on the front porch, cackling like a mad woman. Watching Flynn try to grab Chipper's body, only to have the dog shoot away again like a fuzzy rocket, was the funniest thing she had ever seen. She could practically see steam coming out of Flynn's ears at this point.

"This is all your fault," he yelled at her, trying to make another dive at Chipper. The dog shot to the left right as Flynn landed, so the cowboy ended up on his knees in the mud.

She only laughed harder, tears coming down her cheeks. "This is not my fault! How could you even think that?" she managed to wheeze out between fits of laughter.

"Because," he bellowed, making another dive. This time he was able to outmaneuver Chipper, and wrestled the ball of fur to the ground. "You left the hat," he continued, finally managing to grab the hat with both hands. He tugged hard, and Chipper’s mouth popped open at last. Flynn held the soggy, muddy hat in his hands, frowning deeply. Sighing, he looked up and finished his sentence. "On the table."

Kari walked over to him, wiping the tears of laughter from her eyes. "How was I supposed to know that Chipper was a crazed hat thief? I was just trying to help."

Flynn desperately tried to reshape the hat, but the brim was now a sad sagging mess. He held it out to Kari, exasperated. "You were helping? Why did you even take it off its hook and put it on the kitchen table?"

"Because I was going to clean it as a surprise." Kari took the hat from Flynn's hands and turned it over carefully. "I can still fix this up just fine. You won't even know that it's been dragged through the mud."

"Or Chipper's mouth. I don't like the idea of my head smelling like dog breath."

"I promise I'll fix it up. And I won't try to surprise you with anything else," she said, leaning in close to give him a kiss on the cheek.

Flynn's shoulders loosened visibly, and a small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "I appreciate the thought. And I'll admit it is pretty cute, you acting like a mother hen and taking care of me."

"Mother hen?" Kari wrinkled her nose. "That reminds me of old ladies in little white bonnets. I'm your super sexy house guest who is earning her keep, not a nagging grandma."

"Earning your keep, eh? Well there are better ways to do that than ruining my favorite hat." His voice dropped deeper, and he wrapped an arm around her waist.

"Oh, what would you like me to do?" She looked up at him with a grin, her core beginning to heat up.
