Kana took a long nap during the afternoon. By the time she woke, night had fallen over the city. The bed was so comfortable she didn’t want to get out of it. With a stretch and a yawn, she glanced over at the alarm clock on the nightstand to see what time it was.

“It’s 8:30 already?” She left the bedroom and entered the kitchen to find AJ fiddling with the coffee machine. Kana was surprised to see someone so technical banging away at a kitchen appliance. He stopped when he caught sight of her, turned to her for a moment, and then moved back to the disagreeable kitchen appliance.

Kana took over for AJ, grabbing the machine. “Here, let me do it.”

AJ backed away a few steps and let Kana have her way. She removed the dirty filter, replaced it with a new one, and then turned the machine on again.

“I thought I changed the filter already,” AJ said. “I’ve been working too hard.”

“You should get some rest.”

He shrugged. “I can’t. These translators need to be up and running before you and Stefan go to that party tomorrow or you won’t understand anything anyone is saying. That is unless your Mandarin, Russian, and Portuguese is any better.”

Kana grabbed a coffee mug from the cupboard to pour herself a cup. She’d have to play this casual. AJ’s attitude was better, but that could change if she said the wrong thing. How to start such an awkward conversation? “So, are we going to do this?”

AJ didn’t show any signs of shying away, however. “Yes, we need to talk. I’m not as irritated now as I was earlier.”

“That was irritated?”

“What would you call it?”

Kana spun the cup around on the countertop with her fingers. “I don’t know, AJ. The way you’ve been acting for the last day or so is weird to me. You don’t like Stefan but he’s not that bad a guy.”

AJ smirked as the coffee machine dribbled a stream of its dark brew into the pot. “It’s not necessarily about him. But you… you have this tendency to get involved with the absolute worst guy you can find.”

“Is that so?”

“Come on, Kana. I’ve been there. This is me you’re talking to. You may be smart, but I have the higher IQ.”

“Here we go with that again.”

“You wanted someone there because of the Shinigami.”

She hated that word. It made that dark spirit that visited her randomly at night sound too official, too real. “I’m not going to let it control me. I’ve been dealing with it for a long time now and I don’t need a body in my bed to protect me if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“Not at all. I think you wanted Stefan there because it drove the thoughts you get—those evil thoughts—out of your head. Am I right or wrong?”

He was right. Kana didn’t want to admit it.

AJ continued. “I get it. Alright. I know having that thing follow you around anywhere you go has got to be a terrible burden.
