~Chapter Nine~

Zora sat crossed legged on the ottoman in the middle of the seating group of Kade’s room. She was worn out now. Her buzz was wearing off fast. Kade had carried her wrapped in a big towel that could serve as a blanket if needed up all the stairs as if she weighed nothing. He had left a trail of water with his wet shorts that had Lyndsie fussing at him the whole time.

Dressed in a men’s style under tank with the USMC logo emblazoned on it and a pair of satin boy short panties, she watched Tucker with sleepy eyes as he took her pulse and listened to her heart. “So, what’s the verdict doc?”

Kade and Sawyer stood in matching pose again behind her; arms crossed; legs spread. Kade arched his brow when Tucker sat forward to the edge of the couch to scoop Zora’s wet hair off her back so he could listen again to her take deep breaths.

Tucker ignored him and tilted Zora’s head up to check her pupils again. “How often you do that?”

Zora shrugged. She just wanted a pain pill to combat the coming headache and the bed across the room. “When I have a quick deadline and am too tired to get there normal like. Could one of you get my script from my stuff?”

Kade walked across the room to her pile of things. He resolved to clear some space for her. She did not need to live out of a trash bag on his floor. He found the orange pharmacy bottle and turned it to read the label. Mouth pursed, he walked over and tossed it on the couch next to Tucker instead of handing it to Zora.

Tucker picked it up and read the sticker. He looked to where Zora slumped in front of him, rubbing her lower back. He knew about the knifing after being filled in by Sawyer and it must be bothering her. He twirled his finger for her to turn but refused to give her the bottle. “That’s some serious shit there.”

Zora sighed and propped her chin in her hand, elbow on her folded knee when she was turned. Her hair was tossed fully over her shoulder and her tank lifted to expose the scar. “It does the job.”

Tucker prodded the scar but the woman in front of him did not jerk as if in pain, so she was good. “I think you should take something over the counter instead of these if you can. Seen plenty of people get hooked on this shit.”

Zora felt fingers lift the racer back over her shoulders and looked back. Tucker was looking over her tattoo. The big block gothic style ‘M’ with faded shading from top to bottom, then the rest in a flowing script ‘ayhem’ with a flow of curls and swirls in a vague crow shape on the end to balance it, stretching from one side to the other over her upper shoulder blades. “This is good work. For your dad?”

Zora nodded as the strap snapped back down gently when Kade growled at Tucker.
