At noon the next day I kissed Tía Leo and Jacki good-bye, boarded at the Taca gate. As the flight attendants readied the beverage cart they gossiped loudly about a crew member. For the remaining two hours, they took turns up and down the aisle, collecting trash, and in the back, passing around a celebrity magazine—one the maids frequently left in the laundry room. Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz were on the cover. I might as well serve coffee in a restaurant.

The man snoozing next to me had stowed a crinkled La Semana in his seat pocket. Peace talks between our government and the guerillas had been postponed. While the ELN continued to hold its hostages captive, the FARC had launched an attack against fifteen towns, one just thirty-five miles south of Bogotá—bombing banks, bridges, and power lines; they barricaded roads and attacked police barracks. One army official called it “the largest and most demented guerilla offensive in the past forty years.” I crushed the paper back inside the seat pocket. The sunshine illuminated the field of clouds, the landing gear groaned. We flew through blinding white, then broke through, the lush ranges and flat ranch land rushing up below.
