Dear Jen
As I read this, I feel so guilty. I know how important it is to eat as a family, but I’m so exhausted after working full-time. By the time I pick up the kids from day care, it’s much easier to grab food to go. Then you mention eating by candlelight and inviting someone else to the table, and I want to throw in the towel.
Mom Guilt
Dear Mom Guilt,
First of all, big hugs here from a Chick-fil-A junkie. I’ve done my share of drive-through visits. Some seasons of life make spending concentrated time at the table more difficult than others.
The years with small children are particularly exhausting, so start with little things. Casting a long-term legacy begins with one small step toward intentionality and then guarding the importance of that single step. Look at your schedule and begin by setting a reasonable goal.
Find pockets of time that make eating together four times a week possible.
Enjoy meals together other than dinner. Saturday morning pancakes are always a fun, food tradition. When our busy sports schedules collided, dinners with all seven of us were nearly impossible, but we committed to being home in time for dessert.
Make it fun. Sometimes we ate dinner under the table, or we started with dessert first, while I warned them to “save room for those yummy peas.”
Keep your together-time technology-free. No phones or TV. That means us, too, mommas. Gather the phones and put them away. Remember, it’s not about a rule of law but about the spirit of gathering. Just make sure that once you set aside those times of eating together, you guard them like it’s your job.
