It was a Tuesday morning when everything went to shit.

For Diana, it had started the same as any other weekday at her father's house. Wake up. Brush teeth. Water plants. But instead of moving directly on to the next steps— getting dressed, and going down for breakfast— something strange happened. An unusual, but pleasurable little shiver seemed to travel over Diana’s arms, filling her body with an unfamiliar warmth.

If she was being completely honest, at first she thought she was just horny. It had been a while since she’d been with anyone, and after learning first-hand how much more sensitive a Vampire's nose was, she was hesitant to rub one out in the shower. Especially since she was sharing with Felix.

But that wasn’t it. It was something different. Something new.

Diana sat down on her windowsill, one finger dug into the potting soil of her Money Plant. It was still damp. She didn’t need to water it again.

Shaking off the strange feeling, she took a minute to admire the leafy vines in their prime window spot. While the weather had cooled significantly, most days were still sunny, and the plant had grown a decent amount in the previous month. She had even put a hook against her wall for the vines to climb, though they still looked a little awkward. Diana couldn’t wait until they reached the top of the wall, and she could drape them over the window frame.

Just as she had the thought, that warm, glowy feeling returned, concentrated in her hands. She felt it travel along her fingers and wriggle its way like a little worm into the damp soil. And then her plant grew.

It wasn’t by much. Less than an inch. Such a small amount that she wasn’t even sure it had really happened. Sometimes when you stared at something for too long, it looked like it moved, right?

But still, excitement and hope danced through her veins like little lightning bolts. It couldn’t be. Disappointment was sure to sweep through her any moment now, just like it had for the previous three years, when her powers never showed up. But she had to be sure.

Come on, come on. She pleaded with herself, trying to recreate the sensation of warmth. Closing her eyes, she focused on the vine, imagining what it would look like when it was long, strong, and a little bit wild.

She wasn’t sure how long she sat there, holding the picture in her mind. It could have been one minute or one hundred, but given the fact that no one called out, wondering why she wasn’t at the breakfast table, she didn’t think it had been very long.

When she opened her eyes again, her vine, which hadn’t been more than three feet long, was a solid six. It fell from the hook, the heavy weight of it curling around itself, and resting on the ground. It was undeniably much, much longer than it had been when she woke up.

“Dad!” She yelled, her voice getting caught on a choked gasp.
