CASE 15

THE SHARPSVILLE SHAMBLER

So many cases of bizarre hairy hominids contain earlier encounters of a far more ambiguous sort. This escalation of events from the vague to the definite calls to mind cases of hauntings, which typically start with small disturbances such as weird feelings or strange noises before the appearance of full-bodied apparitions or disembodied voices. The tale of the Sharpsville Shambler exhibits this same sort of pattern.

The story starts in June 1970, with a farmer and ex-marine by the name of Dale King. He had been visiting his future wife at her home in Sharpsville, Indiana, that particular evening when the couple began feeling both physically and emotionally odd. The physical response included intense dizziness and light-headedness, while emotionally, they were each swept with a wave of fear. Finally, they decided they’d try a different atmosphere to escape this bizarre and sudden onset of abnormality and set off for Dale’s home in the country. However, their night soon took a turn from the unusual to the downright strange.

It was already dark out, and the night patched with fog, but ahead of them on the road was an unusually dark area. They actually stopped the vehicle, debating back and forth whether they should turn around or go through this patch of absolute darkness. Finally, they decided to continue on their way, hesitant to return to the strange area of fear that they had been seeking to escape.

As they entered the dark patch of road, the young couple claimed that not only was visibility limited, but their headlights also couldn’t illuminate the road ahead of them. Also, within this dark spot, it was significantly warmer than the surrounding area. Finally, as they approached Dale’s house, the darkness lessened.

Unfortunately for the couple, they were greeted by yet another surprise. Dale’s faithful dog, Zipper, tried to attack them not once, but twice.

As strange as the events of that June night were, all of this was merely a precursor to another series of even stranger events about a year later, in June or July of 1971. One evening, all the family dogs began acting up around 10:00. Zipper, ever the faithful companion, once again takes center stage.

Dale went to see what the ruckus was, and saw that Zipper was busy attacking some bipedal, hair-covered creature, which stood in a low spot in the yard, about twenty-five feet away from the house. Dale stood in the doorway and studied the bizarre creature, which, he claimed, stood about nine feet tall with an oddly shaped head he described as neither ape-like nor manlike, but rather like a large, furry helmet. The being had long arms and was totally covered in dirty, stringy hair.

Dale claimed that it stood in a stooped position and emitted a deep growl as it swung at the dog. The particular actions of this entity are of some note – Dale claimed that it looked like it was moving in slow motion and that it appeared confused or unsure of what it was doing.
