Teddy left a big bruise on my arm. He didn’t leave a mark on my face, but it was still sore. I couldn’t even cry about it anymore. I was too disgusted. I was pregnant with his baby, and he actually had the nerve to put his hands on me. I wanted to hurt him. I wanted to crack his face the same way that I did that window. But I couldn’t. I was a mother now, and also a Christian. I couldn’t give in to those ungodly inclinations anymore.

I was in the bathroom studying my arm when the doorbell rang. I already knew it was Julian. I ran into my room and wrapped a scarf around the bruise, then went downstairs to open the door.

Neither one of us said anything once we faced each other. He looked relieved to see me, and I realized that I’d missed him way more than I allowed myself to believe that I had.

“Come with me,” he finally said.

“Where?”

“Just say you’ll come.”

I stared at him, trying my best to discern the scheme he was plotting.

“Please?” he asked.

You can trust him, Anaya. He’s not Teddy.

I turned and picked up my keys from the coffee table, then joined him outside on the porch. He smiled as I locked the door, but I didn’t want him to know that I was reconsidering starting a relationship with him, so I kept my face straight and told him not to have me out all night. He agreed not to, and together we got into his truck.
