A Grave Matter

After the death of her husband, Glennis Wells was ready for a new beginning. Looking for calm and a slow pace, she found a property in a small rural town in western Michigan. She and her son Kinley were more than excited to start anew.

When the realtor showed her the eighteenth century farmhouse, colored sweet tea, just outside of town, she was already decorating in her mind. She would love the town, the realtor told her. A town with friendly country folks, and yes, there was several locations where she could eventually open her antique shop she always wanted to do, but until then the pole barn would suffice to store her treasures. It was her first official purchase since she was single, twenty something years before. She signed on the dotted lines and the next weekend she and Kinley began to move in.

Glennis was originally from a small village in Germany, and it was there that she met her husband, Frederick. They fell in love, got married, and soon afterward they were brought to Michigan due to his work in the auto industry.

Frederick worked long hours, but Glennis wasn’t raised to be high maintenance. Instead, she kept busy with restoring old furniture and volunteering at the local church. She missed her family at home tremendously, but plane tickets were costly and Frederick was frugal. Most of the furniture she found came from the side of the road on trash day. Glennis never knew true love until she held Kinley and her life felt complete.

Not happy—that was different. She wasn’t raised to be happy. She wasn’t particularly happy in her marriage, or with Frederick in general. She knew he had women on the side, and that his dealings weren’t always on the up and up. She was raised, though, to support her husband and be the best mother, and as long as nobody was being hurt, that life was good. Well, she was hurt some nights when she saw her husband texting from his home office, knowing that at midnight he would be called in by his work, but she decided to channel her attention to what did make her happy.

It was a strangely cold day for August when Frederick came home early from work. That in itself was strange, as Frederick rarely came home before seven in the evening. Seeing the car in the driveway, she quickly began supper. She was unprepared, having found a new table to paint; she’d been busy planning what she wanted to do with it as Kinley contently watched television and busily played with his building blocks.

“Sit down with me,” Frederick asked after hanging up his suit coat.

“I will after I get this pasta to a boil,” Glennis fretted, but Frederick took her hand and guided her to a seat.

“I’m dying, Glennis. The doctor says even with treatment I have just a few months. We need to get life in order now.”

It began with what he thought was the stomach flu, but then nobody else got it in the house, and it lingered.
