Sure enough, the steel door swung open and there, tightly coiled, was Sally Coyle.

“Quick, let’s run,” I said, hardly bothering to whisper anymore. The Joneses’ mumbling was getting less mumbly all the time.

“We can’t,” Julie answered. “Look at her. She’s been in there for hours. She can barely move.”

It was true; Sally was moving like someone coming out of a deep freeze.

Norris sprang to the rescue. He bent down and got his hands underneath Sally’s knees and shoulders. Just as he’d scooped her up, a voice above us rang out.

“Who’s there? What’s going on? Brian? Is that you?”

Mrs. Jones was rubbing her eyes.

“Brian! Someone’s here. What did I tell you about locking doors?”

“I did lock it!” Mr. Jones replied groggily. “What’s going on?”

But before they had a chance to find out, we had scrambled out the door. I was halfway down the hall when I realized Julie wasn’t with us. I looked back to see her fiddling with the key in the lock.

“What are you doing?” I hissed.

“Locking the door,” she hissed back. As soon she’d done it, she snapped the key in the lock and ran after us.

“That should give us a little more time.”

We didn’t bother closing the front door as we all flew across the playground. Norris was carrying Sally under his arm like a giant football. For once in her life, Sally couldn’t get out of school fast enough.
