Chapter Twenty-Three

Jones’s stomach was filled with dread and despair the whole way home from graduation. While he had been embarrassed in front of the whole school, his family, and seemingly the entire town of Briarwood, nothing seemed worse to him than the wrath he would experience at the hands of his father.

His parents had walked out of graduation after Jones had embarrassed himself on the stage, and Jones saw the hate and disappointment in his father’s eyes as he left.

They took the car home, so Jones had to walk all the way back to his house wearing nothing but his graduation gown.

He had been publicly embarrassed in front of everyone in the town, and he felt like he couldn’t show his face in Briarwood again. As he looked around the crowd, seeing all of the faces laughing at him, he knew that there was no turning back now. There was no saving his reputation, and he couldn’t live with people knowing what had happened to him. He knew that every time someone saw him at the grocery store, the first thing they would see in their minds was him falling flat on his face, naked as the day he was born. Nobody would ever take him seriously again.

Jones would kill everyone in that room if he could, starting with Max, Kyle, and Carol.

But all of that would have to wait until he dealt with the wrath of his father.

Jones turned down his driveway, sweat dripping off his forehead and soaking his gown. The oversized garment wasn’t really meant to walk in for long distances, especially not in the summer heat. He could feel it sticking to his back as he moved, and one look down would tell him that the pit areas of the gown were soaked through with sweat. To make matters worse, he had to hold the thing shut like a robe or risk flashing the whole neighborhood as he walked.

Jones stopped outside of his house, noting how quiet it was. Normally he would have heard the screams of his father from a mile away, but a look at the driveway told him that his father hadn’t come home.

Jones walked inside, seeing his mother at the kitchen table, looking down and ashing a cigarette.

“Ma, I’m so sorry about what happened. I never meant for that to happen,” Jones said.

His mother never looked up at him, she just took another long pull of her cigarette.

Jones reckoned that it would be a while before he could get through to her, and he desperately needed to change into a different set of clothes.

He walked into his bedroom, closing the door behind him and locking it.

The day was getting late, and the sun was disappearing behind the fence, casting long shadows through his window.

Jones had barely finished changing into a different outfit when there came a loud bang from the living room.

Jones turned toward his bedroom door, his fear causing goosebumps to rise up on his arms.

“WHERE IS HE?” his father shouted from the other room.
