SCENE 2

Three weeks later. The flat is looking more elegant. DESNA is dressing for work. NUDY is struggling through the door with a new stereo.

DESNA: I can’t believe it. I honestly thought I’d never see that restaurant again. Still, what about Poppy? It’s worse for her. Four thousand! I mean, she built that company up from nothing!

NUDY: I still think you should give Joe Norton a ring.

DESNA: By the way, I found Gemma’s bag.

NUDY: Where was it?

DESNA: You know, strange thing, it’s full of other people’s letters.

NUDY: What people?

DESNA: I don’t know. They’re all different. I don’t think they’re people she knows.

NUDY: What the hell is a four pin din? I’ve never owned anything as expensive as this. Do you think we should get it insured?

DESNA: You know what I think.

NUDY: If I’d got this retail it would have been six hundred quid.

DESNA: I still think it’s too much to pay for a record player.

NUDY: It’s not a record player, it’s a stereo! I got it for you. You’re the musician!

DESNA: I don’t want it.

NUDY: Why are we always quarrelling?

DESNA: Maybe we need a break.

NUDY: Why don’t we go somewhere next weekend?

DESNA: Do you mean it?

NUDY: Sure. I’ll be finished by then.

There is a knock on the door. DESNA answers it. It is GEMMA.

GEMMA: I’ve done a terrible thing. I’ve just given my husband-to-be the slip. We were in Selfridges shopping and I suddenly got the most dreadful claustrophobia. Do you want a cigarette?

DESNA: No thanks.

GEMMA: God, his family. I think they’re all mentally subnormal. Hello Nudy, is that a new stereo?

NUDY: No it’s a washing machine.

GEMMA: Don’t do that! Don’t be horrible to me! There’s no need for it! I’m trying to be nice!

NUDY ignores her and concentrates on assembling the stereo.

DESNA: Oh don’t worry about him. How are the wedding arrangements?

GEMMA: Not bad. They’ve hired a church in Highgate for the cemetery, I mean ceremony. It’s a very nice church. His parents are flying over from Cyprus. It’s a big event for them. You’d think they were getting married – not me.

DESNA: Do you know what you’re going to wear yet?

GEMMA: Yes, I’m having an absolutely exquisite victorian wedding dress, literally covered in white lace. And the bridesmaids are having dresses specially made in powder blue silk taffeta. It’s going to cost a bomb. There are six Bentleys for the reception afterwards.

DESNA: Where are you having it?

GEMMA: The Swiss Cottage Holiday Inn.

The phone rings. NUDY gets it.

NUDY: Hello?… Yeah… Yeah… Uhuh…

DESNA: Cheer up Gemma for heaven’s sake. If you don’t want to marry him, don’t. You don’t have to.

NUDY: (On phone.) For how long?

GEMMA: Except that I’m pregnant.

DESNA: Are you? Really?

GEMMA: Yeah, but I suppose I could always have an abortion.

NUDY: (On phone.) No, that’s fine… Okay… Bye.

DESNA: How long have you known?

NUDY puts the phone down. The doorbell rings. DESNA answers it. It is RAY. His neck is in plaster. He is carrying a television.

RAY: Do you want a colour telly?

DESNA: What’s happened to your neck?

RAY: Oh, er, spot of bother.
