This is an exciting and imaginative invitation. The Episcopal Church, like few other Euro-tribal churches, has begun to grasp what is at stake in responding to the Spirit’s invitation to stop the “fixing” defaults and join the God who is ahead of us. Clearly this does not imply the end of once-dominant European churches. If they are to thrive, they will need to reimagine their identity and role. This will require them to reengage with the stories of their beginnings and understand how they can act apart from the ecclesiocentric defaults that have shaped their lives for decades or more.

These defaults are deep. They don’t go away because a group has framed a prescient, imaginative invitation. How do we move past defaults that have been in place through most of the last century? What practices would help congregations and church-wide bodies to truly join up with God, to remake church, and ultimately to take their part in transforming communities so they reflect the reign of God? Part II outlines the shape of such a journey.
