Han Yoon didn’t show up until late that night, but Jiyu was ready. She’d eaten dinner, gotten into her pajamas, and waited.

“You’re still up?” He looked at her, sitting on the new couch. “I thought you’d be asleep by now.”

“I was just about to go to bed. Long day?”

He ran a hand through his hair and nodded, looking tired. “Yeah. One of the tougher days that come with this job. Funny how I’ve been relieved of my normal duties, but I keep getting pulled in by critical stuff. Maybe the world is harder than it used to be. Maybe I’m just tired. I don’t know. I’m just going to shower and fall into bed.” He paused. “What’s this? New couch?”

She nodded, pleased. “Yes! It’s a pull-out. I researched a ton, and this one has the best ratings for comfort both as a bed and a couch.”

She stood, turned, and pulled the couch open in one swift movement. Suddenly, her living room was a second bedroom. She felt quite pleased with herself.

“I already made it up with sheets and everything.” She added helpfully.

“Huh. Nice. The old couch was like sitting on a sack of bowling balls, so this will surely be an improvement. Let me know how it goes.” He turned toward the bathroom.

“Hey, what now? I got this for you to sleep on. It’s my apartment. I want my bed back.”

“So sleep there. I haven’t tried to prevent you.”

She scowled. “I’ve told you this before. I don’t like sharing a bed. Never have. Not with friends or cousins or anyone.”

He shrugged. “Sleep tight.”

Before she could protest again, he closed himself in the bathroom.

She let out a small breath. Fine. She’d hoped he would just do the right thing on his own, but she’d thought this through. She had a fallback plan ready.
