Dealing With Jezebel: Do’s and Don’ts
Do: Confront the person but spiritually war against the spirit of Jezebel.
Don’t: Don’t allow any single person to take your focus off the spirit of Jezebel that is in operation.
CHAPTER 7
THE FAMILY TREE
In this chapter, we will take a deeper look into Jezebel’s immediate family. The Jezebel spirit wreaks havoc on the family and church body. This spirit operates generationally and, without a strong spiritual leader to stop it, runs free to torment and ruin relationships. More times than not, the Jezebel spirit is enabled and empowered by a close family dynamic or insecure leadership that appears to be spiritually healthy, but in actuality is corrupt to the core. Jezebel’s enabled behavior has a devastating effect on families and churches.
It’s important to reflect on how you were raised. Many Christians do not regularly practice stopping to ask themselves, “Why do I think the way I do?” or more importantly, “Do my beliefs line up with the Word of God?” Far too many who claim to be Christians say what they want, do what they want, vote however they want, and respond however they want with no regard to what the Bible says. It’s much easier to say, “I did this because...my family is Italian,” “...I’m hot-tempered—I’m Irish,” or “...this is just the way I am” and so on, thus justifying our decisions and behavior. Far too many of us make excuses for our decisions and behavior rather than changing them or challenging them with the Word of God.
In fact, family dynamics are so strong and influential in forming our beliefs and behaviors, they often trump the teachings of the Bible in our hearts. Jesus knew this. That’s why He made this point in Matthew 12:48-50 (NLT): “Jesus asked, ‘Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?’ Then he pointed to his disciples and said, ‘Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!’” What makes this scripture so interesting is that Jesus had a good relationship with His family. So why did He say it? To show us that our relationship with God needs to be greater than our relationships with even our closest family members.
