Every graduating class from the dorm I lived in during college would pass down a photo album. Inside the photo album was a collection of pictures from previous graduating classes posing with the campus security guard. Late at night the security guard would walk through all the buildings on campus with a flashlight, making sure everything was locked up. Then he would drive around campus for an hour and eventually park his car in front of the administration building. Sometime around three o’clock in the morning, he would take a nap. Once he was asleep, we would all gather at his cop car and take what we called a “family portrait” of us all posing with him asleep in his car.
Some would lie on the hood; others would be so bold as to crawl on top of his car. One graduating class tied barnyard animals to his bumper and had a Noah’s Ark theme. My class decided that posing on the outside of the car was playing it safe, so we decided to crawl inside the car and snap a family portrait from inside. I drew the short straw, so I had to slide in the front seat first, right next to Barney Fife. Some of my buddies climbed in next to me, while others piled in the backseat.
We all wore wigs and beards and bathrobes—our theme was the Last Supper of Jesus with the twelve apostles. The guys in the back row were all breaking bread, while all of us in the front seat were holding up chalices filled with grape juice.
Jesus, please forgive me!
There we sat—thirteen of us—inside the car with a sleeping security guard who was probably in his midseventies. But when the freshman outside the car snapped the picture, the flash woke up the security guard, and everyone scattered like mad to get out of the car.
But I was stuck! I decided to play it cool. I turned to my left and smiled at him. All I remember saying as I slid out was, “Sir, please don’t pepper spray me! Please don’t pepper spray me.”
Most people go to college to get smart. You would think the smarter we get the less we would sin. People are getting smarter but not wiser. For example, I read in an article from a London newspaper that Dutch psychologists hope to remove the social stigmas from pedophilia and normalize it as a healthy sexual orientation. It was backed up with modern research and lauded as scholarship. But is it wise?
“The wisdom of this world,” said Paul, “is foolishness to God” (1 Cor. 3:19 NLT).
Twenty years ago I had to walk away from some friendships to become friends with Jesus. My friends were pulling me down, and I needed a friend who could pull me up. That friend was and still is Jesus. Because of Jesus I can now stand on a roof and pull others up without them pulling me down. Because of Jesus I can now point other people to the path that leads to life—the path that leads to God.
