When Amy got off the coach, she didn’t even say hello or give me a hug. She was breathless to tell me. The words were tumbling out of her as we walked home.

‘Dad, you’re not going to believe this. But you know in that story you gave me, all about Jemima and those a hundred and twenty-seven acorns, about how that teacher, Mr Hicks, made you leave behind those acorns you stuffed into your coat pocket before you left Wick, and how he told you you should really leave them where they belonged and throw them all out in the corner of the field, by the bridge?

‘Well, they grew. They’re trees now, Dad, proper trees, ten of them, like a little forest, some of them twice as tall as you. So you planted a forest, Dad. And, and, and do you know, Dad, Dad, they still have Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs on the farm? The farmer told me they’re still from the same family as Jemima. He remembers Jemima, and the fifteen piglets. It was a record. No pig has ever had so many piglets since in one go. I told him all about the hundred and twenty-seven acorns, and he laughed so much he shook all over.’

I hardly knew what to say. It was so good to have her home, and to have her ending. Far better than mine. So I added it on to my story. She didn’t seem to mind. And she agreed that it does make it a far better story.
