Before the Storm

I took a sip of my black tea as I looked out into the distance, grateful that on a humid day like today, I was protected by the cove and could still enjoy nature.

A couple nights ago—or rather earlier that morning—my time with Korie had been liberating in ways I didn’t expect. At first, I thought I enjoyed it so much because I’d already gone thirty of the forty days I dedicated to abstaining from sex and alcohol, but that wasn’t it. It was her. All her.

Her taste.

Her touch.

Her moans.

Yesterday, Korie and I hadn’t seen much of each other because I had several business meetings with my team and family. On every call, I felt like the receiver could sense a difference in me, but only Hollis and Ice called me out, alluding to the change being Korie.

Being with her had put me in a poetic state of mind, which coincidently, was exactly where I needed to be now that I was on the phone with a close friend and a couple of my brothers discussing some shit that we’d been waiting to do for years.

“I really wish we could all be out there for this,” Saint said. “But with shit still hot in Chicago, we got too much going on here. It’s best we’re not all away from Chicago at the same time.”

“I got J’s back out here,” our friend Carter “GB” Madden voiced, who owned a cabin not too far away. “I just arrived at my place an hour ago and we’ll handle business together tonight. I know we gotta keep our distance at times in Chicago for the safety of our families, but I told y’all, if you need me and mine, just say the word.”

“You being here for this means a lot,” I told him. “Proud of everything you’ve been doing with your life lately.”

“Shit, you ain’t lyin’, Hollis,” Carter voiced.

Hollis snorted. “Told you she makin’ his ass soft.”

“Ain’t nobody soft,” I defended. “Was tryin’ to pay you a compliment, but I can take the shit back.”

“Nah, don’t do that,” Carter said. “I appreciate you, J. It took most of my life to get here, but I’m in a good place right now and I’ll be in an even better place after tonight.”

We all grew quiet, each of us reflecting on how monumental this moment was. There was no secret we had a lot of enemies, but Kevin Williams had to be one of the most ruthless bastards I ever met. Army sergeant from hell and an example of how one man could abuse his power by using good people for his own personal, unwarranted vendettas.

To be honest, that wasn’t even the part that got to me the most. It was the things I saw him do. The dehumanizing ways of a man who didn’t give a shit about respecting men, but especially women. We worked off the books for that man for longer than any of us liked
