Sophie and I smiled at each other. I was happy that she and Akari were in a fight. Just two more days until we left Akari behind!
After we finished our snacks, Sophie came to my pretend house for reading time. Fred Just Fred took a nap.
âGirls!â Momâs voice floated up the stairs. âLunchtime!â
âWe should clean up,â Sophie said. âTogether.â
Doing anything with Sophie made me happy, even though I was not a fan of cleaning up. It felt like we were a team.
When we got downstairs, Akari was sitting by herself at the table.
âSophie and Jasmine,â Mom said, âcould you come in here and help me?â
We walked into the kitchen. Mom had that wrinkle on her forehead that meant she was annoyed. It was the first time in a long time she looked annoyed with both of us at the same time.
âWhere were you two?â Mom asked. âI found Akari watching TV all by herself.â
Sophie was quiet. She nibbled her lip. I knew that meant she was nervous.
âAkari was watching a scary movie,â I said. âSo we went upstairs.â
Mom shook her head. âYou should have invited Akari to join you. She said you both left her there. Alone.â
âWeâre sorry, Mom,â I said.
âI expect you to play nicely together. Itâs not kind to leave someone out,â Mom said.
It was my turn to nibble my lip. Not because I was nervous, but because I wanted to keep the words from flying out of my mouth. I knew if I told Mom that Akari was the one leaving me out, it would sound like I was making excuses. Plus, I could tell from Momâs face that she was not in a listening mood.
âYes, Mom,â Sophie finally said.
I did not make any promises. The longer Sophie was mad at Akari, the more time I would have with Sophie alone. And to be honest, I did not think the three of us could play together nicely.
