Chapter 16

“I don’t give a fuck who does it,” James snapped at King. “But someone is approving my reassignment back to Apex.”

King stood splay-legged in front of Lilly’s desk, arms crossed over his chest while his Angel peered around him.

Shaking his head, King said, “I told you, James, Monroe isn’t in. I can’t have him approve anything.”

“Then you do it!”

The way King kept right on shaking his head told James that there was no way it was happening. Peering around King, James narrowed his eyes on Lilly. “You do it then.”

Lilly offered him an apologetic smile. “Monroe wants you here, James, and what the Dominant wants…”

“The Dominant bastard gets,” James finished. An explosive snarl ripped from him as he turned and stormed toward the door bellowing, “Fuck this shit! I’m calling Tyce!”

“James,” King admonished. “Don’t turn this into a battle between the Dominants. Monroe is trying to give you a chance to reconcile your past. Take it.”

Whirling around, James jammed a finger at King. “Have you all lost your fucking minds? She’s got a damn kid! A bad kid! I can barely stay in control around her, and now I find out she’s got this cussy little bad…kid who outright attacked me. Me! And you know what? I might not be Conn or York, but I coulda took him!”

King chuffed a laugh.

“I could have,” James declared before giving King and Lilly his back. “And I am calling Tyce. I ain’t doin’ this shit, man! I just…ain’t! Cuz something’s wrong. Something happened when I laid eyes on that little hellion.”

King lowered his arms, a frown taking his features. “What do you mean something happened. What’d you do?”

“Nothing, fucker! Something happened to my halo, and I felt sick.”

Lilly stood from the desk, circling it to grip King’s forearm with both hands and looking at James. “What happened?”

“I dunno,” James reached up and gripped it. “It’s fucking broken or something. It was all blinky.”

“It flashed?” King asked taking a step closer. “Did it flash, James?”

“Listen,” James’ brows speared down. “I know what you’re getting it, and no. It wasn’t the affliction. I was looking at the kid. The kid! Not Prim! And I ain’t gay, or a pedophile so eat shit and die, King!”

“Are you sure?” Lilly asked.

James jerked his gaze to Lilly. “Yeah, Lil. I’m one hundred percent certain that I’m not gay or a child molester.”

“Not that,” she tisked in annoyance, brows snapping into a frown. “I mean are you sure you weren’t afflicted by Prim?”

“No!” he snapped. “It wasn’t Prim. It wasn’t!”

“Well, how do you feel about her right now?” Lilly prodded. “If you thought someone was going to go hurt her or her son, what’s your knee-jerk reaction?”

Thinking about someone going after Prim or her kid had James’ blood going cold. Pure, lethal menace filled him, and he couldn’t stop his lip from peeling back or the growl that ripped its way up his throat. The longer he thought on someone even thinking about touching either of them had something building up inside of him.
