CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Silas and his three friends stopped us in our tracks as soon as we staggered into the palace to head to the cafeteria for lunch.

“Hello,” Silas sneered at me and Mikael. “Did you enjoy Enchantment? We’re heading there now.”

Most of the class, including Justice, Gorgona, and Peter, sidestepped us and kept moving down the hallway, leaving Mikael and me alone.

I gripped my wand, but I hadn’t learned any spells yet to protect myself.

“Leave us alone,” I said, staring deep into his eyes. Although I had a guess that as a fae, he’d been learning magic for years, I refused to let him think he could intimidate me or my new friend.

One of Silas’s friends, an Arab girl, snickered, placing both hands on her face. “ ‘Leave us alone,’ ” she mocked.

“Nahri, don’t scare them just yet,” Silas laughed. “And, Erick and Sean, be nice.”

“So, you were friends with Elijah Williams?” a white boy who I assumed to be Erick asked, leaning closer to me.

“Yeah,” I said, trying to stand up taller. “What of it?”

“Did he ever do magic around you?” Sean, a Black boy, asked.

“No, he didn’t,” I said. Then I remembered our basketball game before he disappeared and the way he whispered to himself sometimes, but they didn’t need to know that. “Why does that matter?”

Silas snickered. “Rumors. People said he was always whispering to himself in the corridors of the palace, creating spells.”

“They say there hasn’t been a student who’s ever been like Elijah,” Nahri said.

Silas glared at her and puffed out his chest. “Yeah, except for probably me. He might’ve been great, but I’m the heir to the Summerlands.”

“Right,” Nahri agreed quickly.

Mikael made to step around Silas and his crew. “Are you done? We have to get to lunch.”

Nahri held out an arm, stopping his movement. “You can leave when we tell you that you can leave.”

“Well, I say, good riddance to Elijah,” Silas said, his sneer returning. “He was up to no good.”

“I don’t believe that,” I said.

“Well, he was,” Silas snapped at me. “And I know because my parents told me that some students were saying he was doing some wild experiments.”

“Wild experiments? What does that mean?”

Mikael pushed Nahri’s arm away. “Don’t listen to them, Jaden.”

“If he was siphoning magic, then what was he using it for?” Silas smirked. “That had to mean Elijah was into some evil stuff, you know?” Satisfaction covered his face.

“I don’t believe that,” I repeated, feeling defensive. “Elijah is one of the best people I know.”

Silas scoffed. “You taking up for Elijah is starting to make me believe that you’re just like him.”

I stepped to him. “Take that back!”

“No,” he spat. “He was an evil, siphoning monster, and so are you. You don’t deserve to be here.” He gestured at the wand I gripped in my hand. “And that bristlecone wand shouldn’t have bonded with you either. It’s made for someone who’s heritage, like me. You’re just as bad as Elijah. I’m glad he’s disappeared.”

I pointed my wand at him but couldn’t say a spell.
