They said he’s really into her. The way he looks at her. One of my clients had brandished a photo of an intent Lachlan gazing at the sexiest female I’d ever seen. For a heartbeat, I thought, Nice.

I swiped my wrist against my forehead. It was cool out, but I’d been working in the yard all day. My parents had a lake cabin that my siblings and I were welcome to use any time, and I had taken it upon myself to get it clean and ready for each upcoming year. It just so happened to be the day Lachlan said he’d come home.

No coincidence.

Memphis Peridot was everything I wasn’t. She didn’t have to prove she was tough. She looked it. An edgy haircut. Dark hair swirled over the top of her head with shaved sides. She was easily six feet tall with broad shoulders and hips to die for.

I had smiled at my client as I finished her nails, told her I’m certain they’re talking about clan business with confidence I didn’t feel, and then told her I didn’t have any openings when she wanted to schedule her next manicure. I’d be perpetually busy whenever she asked.

My mother jokingly called me the runt of the litter. Even before our kind made a pact with the powers that be to take human form and move among the up-and-coming dominant species of the planet, humans, we didn’t birth litters.

I was the youngest of six. The tiniest. Mom was proud Jade’s ruler had chosen me as his mate. You’ll have someone to look after you.

For a species who prided themselves on strength, I was coddled for my diminutiveness.

I took my gardening gloves off and tossed them on the ground at my feet. After checking the time on my phone, I sighed and let my arm drop, my phone still in my hand. It was only four in the afternoon. If Lachlan had taken off this morning, he’d probably just returned. I chewed on my lower lip. Could I kill five more hours cleaning weeds and flower beds?

Scanning the property, I couldn’t find enough to keep me occupied. I had cleaned out the daffodils and purple irises, changed the oil in the lawn mower, and picked up litter in and around the cabin, especially the ditch by the main road leading to the long driveway winding into the property. Whoever liked to throw their beer bottles out the window preferred Bud Light or Coors. If I ever caught them, I’d throw the trash through their windshield.

I had the garbage bag loaded into the back of my parents’ pickup. My car was parked at their place on the edge of town. I could clean the inside of the cabin, but I hated to be stuck indoors on a beautiful day like today. The sun was out with big puffy clouds in the sky, and the temperature was low enough to keep me from being a sweaty mess. I might be perpetually frustrated and disappointed by my mate, but I didn’t want to look like a disaster around him.
