Something was calling her towards the water. A lighthouse in the distance, a small but bright beacon of safety shining repeatedly in her direction. If she could just swim out there, out to the lighthouse, she could find her way to safety. But the waves were too big, and the sand was swallowing her up to her knees each time she tried to take a step. The wind pelted her skin with sand, and she placed a protective hand over her exposed belly.

Suddenly, cold, slimy hands grabbed at her arm. She turn and went to scream when she saw who was holding on to her, but no sound came out.

Carter Clayborne was standing in front of her, clawing at her. She couldn’t get out of his grasp. She couldn’t escape him.

Sneering, he shouted over the wind, “Did you really think I wouldn’t find you? And what did you expect me to do when I found you? Just let you go? Ha! You have always been such a naïve woman, Grace. And now it’s time for me to finally take care of you and this problem,” he firmly grabbed her belly, “once and for all.”

He threw her to the ground, kicking and punching all over her body. She cried and scratched at Carter, trying anything she could think of to get away. She was moving in slow motion while everything around her was running at full speed. Her head felt groggy and slowly she slumped down into the sand, praying the water would take her away before Carter had a chance to. The water was warm, lapping up over her face. Instead of feeling pain as it filled up her lungs, she felt peace. Each time a wave pulled back and exposed her to the air, she could hear someone in the distance yelling her name. With everything in her heart, Grace prayed that the person calling out would come and save her, but her heart knew the only way to survive was to give into the waves and drown.
