Chapter Eight

Firefly Lane, 1:30 p.m.

Huck had called the number again. Finally, he left a voice mail.

He and Olivia had stopped at Nelson’s Funeral Home to take care of the arrangements for Willy. His ashes would be ready when Nelson’s opened tomorrow morning. Olivia had asked Huck to call Ms. Lockhart and the sheriff. He’d done so on the drive back to Willy’s house. Both would be there. Then Decker had asked Huck for an update.

There wasn’t a lot to say just yet, but the information the woman at the corner market had given basically confirmed what the message on her bedroom wall suggested: someone had been looking for Olivia. This unknown person could certainly be the person involved with Willy’s death and the ransacking of his home and workspace.

So far, they hadn’t talked much about the other part of what the woman had said. Olivia wasn’t dangerous, and she certainly hadn’t been in that neighborhood. She hadn’t even been back in the state since Christmas.

Huck parked behind Olivia’s SUV. He turned to her. She hadn’t moved. Just sat in the passenger seat staring forward. He understood that focusing on Willy’s arrangements had helped her to get past the woman’s bizarre comments for a little while, but now there was nothing to do except examine the information more closely.

“I have a friend in Miami,” Huck said.

Olivia turned to him and waited for the rest.

“He’s not a cop, but he used to be one. He’s a PI now, and he has the kind of contacts cops aren’t supposed to use. I think he’ll be able to help us figure out who this number belongs to.”

She nodded. “I appreciate whatever you can do.”

“Meanwhile,” he suggested, “how about we look through your mother’s things again and see if we find out anything else about your father?”

“You read my mind.” She reached for her door.

Huck got out and met her on the stone path that led to the front porch. The sun was scorching today. Above average heat for June. Life in the South, he mused.

“You know,” Olivia said, “when the waitress said the guy had been looking for someone who looked like me, I thought she might be playing us.” She shrugged. “But now...” She hesitated at the front door. “I just don’t see how this is possible.”

“It’ll take time,” he assured her, “but we will put the pieces together.”

She exhaled a big breath, nodded.

When she would have unlocked the door, he reached for the key. “Why don’t I do that?”

Without argument, she placed it in his hand.

He opened the door and took a step over the threshold. Fortunately, all looked exactly as they’d left it that morning.

“It’s clear,” he said, pulling the door open wider for her.

Still gun-shy, she walked in and looked around before visibly relaxing.

He closed and locked the door. “I’ll do a walk-through, then, if you’d like, you can start looking through your mother’s room while I make that call to my friend.” He drummed up a smile. “I could warm up that casserole Ms.
