For years, I was kept by the descendants of that clockmaker, Claus Uhrmacher. Some of them would taunt me, others would pretend I didn’t exist. The last one had a gambling addiction, even as a child. As a result, I was finally freed from the clutches of the Uhrmachers. He ended up in a game with a luck witch, and so I became part of her spoils.

She was the first sign I might one day be freed from this prison. My box was never opened in all the hundred years the Uhrmachers kept me imprisoned. But she was the first to open the box. To turn the handle until out I popped.

My first breaths of fresh air in centuries.

“Aren’t you a frightening little creature,” were her first words to me. The next, her name: Eudora.

I had no name to give her. Mine was taken from me when they stole my powers. So she named me. As children do, the name she gave me was terribly inventive: Jack.

I looked different back then. Wilder. More like the demon I am. It is how the clockmaker tricked me into this form—vanity. She was so young then, a child like the Uhrmacher. It’s her hand that drew the hearts on my eyes, that brushed my hair until it lay flat as the wild curls would allow. It’s her that painted the designs on the box, covering up the sigils that kept me trapped. She had no intent to let me free, only keep me like a pet.

The last of the Uhrmachers wasn’t the only one with a gambling addiction. She enjoyed it too, growing more and more desirous of a game the older she got. Trapped as I was, she often played against me when no other partner could be found.

Every time, I lost. The fun of it was lost each time.

Little bits, here and there, she would tell me of her life. Get what she needed out of me, confide. But each night, she would close me back up so that I couldn’t roam.

Years past. Decades. Thousands and thousands of games lost.

And over the years, she took in cats. So many cats.

Often, they would brush up against me or bat at my head like a toy if she wasn’t looking. The male cats would try to piss on me. They pissed everywhere.

So much for the fresh breaths of air.
