Epilogue

On Sunday evening, Nando and their children arrived home. Agnese had prepared a special welcome dinner, and chatter, laughter and stories filled the living room until much later than usual. Both Lilia and Luca had plenty of adventures to share with their mother. But when they asked her how her weekend had gone, fearing the truth would excite them too much to sleep when they’d got school the next day, Agnese simply shook her head.

“Quiet, ordinary. Nothing happened, nothing at all.”

But once she was in her bedroom, Agnese opened her diary. Nando was still watching TV on the sofa, so she’d have a little time to herself. Using her favourite bullet points, she listed the main happenings of the actually very eventful weekend.

I asked Giò to tell me the whole story; I couldn’t get to grips with how she’d realised the conversation between Mr Montagna and Mrs Scalzacane in the public gardens was a red herring. She believes they saw her going into the Villa Comunale from Mrs Scalzacane’s house, which she passed on the way, and decided to follow her and perform their little charade. She remembers thinking at the time how unlikely it was that they didn’t notice her sitting there, and once they were gone, she was left with the feeling they had both been acting out roles. After all, a lamb is always a lamb, but Mrs Scalzacane is a wolf. And so, it seems, is Luigi Montagna. That set her on a series of “What if?” questions until she realised she could explain everything that had happened.

When Giò shared her thoughts with Paolo, he suggested they arrest Mr Cambiale, and then follow the other two to see if they panicked. And they did – they walked straight into the trap.

The stupid Cambiale didn’t realise there was no way Mrs Scalzacane would ever love him, and that she was just using him so she could free herself up to be with her true love, Luigi Montagna. And when Zoe got involved just by chance, they realised it couldn’t have been better – with her accused of murder, they’d not only get away with their crime, they would have the whole of the inheritance to themselves. Cambiale would never give Mrs Scalzacane away as that would mean he’d have to admit he had killed her husband.

But what if Zoe had not inadvertently come into the picture? What if Mr Cambiale had confessed the truth, but said he had committed the murder at Mrs Scalzacane’s request? Well, he’d have had no proof. The staff would have backed her up, saying that if Mrs Scalzacane had feelings for anyone in the office, they were certainly not for Cambiale. The plan was so well-conceived, almost the perfect murder.

Mr Scalzacane himself turned out to be a lamb in wolf’s clothing. Maybe he realised his wife was cheating on him, or maybe he simply felt Miss Zerbino deserved more than he had ever acknowledged. I don’t know if he ever suspected his wife would go to the extreme of killing him.
