Chapter Thirteen

Eloise rubbed her sweaty palms on her short black dress. A lot rode on the success of tonight’s séance. If the ghost glasses worked, TTI would surpass their competitor. The value of Samuel and his cohorts would skyrocket, allowing them to have their pick of campuses to work at once their one-year stay in Knotty came to an end. And she would be able to prove to the man she lived with he wasn’t crazy for wanting to believe she was legit. That it wasn’t wishful thinking on his part.

After much soul-searching, Eloise had admitted to herself she wanted to continue exploring the sparks between them. Of course, she wasn’t his forever after person, and he wasn’t hers, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t enjoy each other’s company while living in Knotty. As long as they did so with solid safety measures in place. Measures to keep them from mistaking sex with love.

She’d tried knitting this morning to test her theory about her palm spell being out-of-whack. Her lack of being able to even cast on stitches was all she needed to know that from now on, she couldn’t tell anyone anything about their palm that wasn’t actually visible in the lines of their hands. No more telling them what she saw, and if she did blurt out something, she’d just have to admit it was a mistake. And she would look up all the ladies she’d given wrong information to about their Puzzle Pieces and tell them the truth.

Maybe that was something she could do the night of the mixer.

She owed Ruby Rae a huge thank you for bulldozing her and Jeff into their current living arrangement. Eloise hadn’t realized what she’d been missing not having someone to come home to at night until she’d experienced it. Tonight, after Samuel left, she planned on telling Jeff she’d changed her mind about their one and done sex deal.

Refocusing her attention on what mattered, she inhaled the lingering aroma from the smudge she’d done on the room earlier in the day. Everything was ready.

Charm pranced into the room, stopped, haughtily surveyed the view, and then stretched. “I don’t know why you’re all in a tizzy over getting a couple of humans to figure out they are not the center of the universe.”

As cats went, Charm fit all the stereotypes. A complete and total asshole most of the time. “Wouldn’t it be nice if humans understood you so you could tell them what you really think when they tell you to get off the furniture?”

Charm licked her front paws. “I guess I would enjoy seeing their faces when they realized my meows are not purrs of affection but instead my actually saying fuck you.”

Having been the recipient of Charm’s fuck you on more than one occasion, Eloise did not smile. The damn cat had been a graduation gift from Grandmother Hagatha. That and her vintage broom. “And I would find it nice not to have to worry that my future Puzzle Piece will think me weird after he learns of my heritage.
