Chapter SIX

Life had certainly changed Antonio’s priorities lately and he couldn’t say he was at all worried about it. The day after he’d found out he was going to be a father, he’d walked past a high end baby boutique on his way to a meeting and slipped inside. Everything had been so tiny, too small to believe it would ever fit anyone. But the salesgirl assured him it would. So, he’d bought a green and yellow onesie that said I Love My Daddy. It was tucked away in the room he’d already designated as the nursery.

Tanya didn’t know any of that, of course, because she hadn’t been to his place since the first night. But she would be soon for another date. A smile always touched his face when he thought about her and their dates. She was wholesome in ways he couldn’t even begin to imagine. She didn’t curse and her substitutes were adorable darn and gosh and once, shucks. Tanya embraced every new restaurant or show or museum with the exuberance of a child and he loved it. It also underscored his own increasingly cynical views toward life and his wealth.

What he liked best was that she wasn’t drawn in by his wealth; it still made her uncomfortable as hell. She always balked at menu prices, cab fares, and big tips. It brought a smile to his face whenever she gave him sad eyes because she couldn’t contribute to the check. Tanya was a refreshing mix of soft sensual woman and naïve young woman. And, she would be all his. He hoped.

Life was about to change for Tanya in ways even she hadn’t thought of yet. So far, she was most concerned with how a child would influence her career, which he could understand since she’d just become a lawyer. But to be so focused on her career to the exclusion of all else was a mistake. A giant mistake he knew all too well. He’d spent so much of his life focusing on nothing but building Leopold’s in more than two dozen cities across North America, then hopping the ocean to bring his quality gems and designs to Europe. In the past decade, he made more money than his great grandchildren would ever be able to spend and all he had to show for it was a big fat bank account.

Now with Tanya, he had a chance to have more. He had a chance for family he’d always said he wanted, but never made time for. Now, he would make time.

Now, he needed to start making plans for his future and his lawyer and friend Jason would be here any minute to start. He gazed out the window, looking at the city as it made the transition from autumn to winter. The leaves were still red and gold, very little green to be seen anywhere. It was still one of the most gorgeous sights on the planet.

“Someone called for a super handsome lawyer?”

Antonio turned with a smile.
