6.1.7 Economic and Recreational Value
In recent years, sea turtles have gained the attention of local dive operations, conservation groups, and the tourist industry. Fortunately, their popularity has led to increased sense of pride in protecting the plight of these endangered species. Non-profit and for-profit entities provide educational sea turtle walks that the public can join in the summer months to watch loggerhead sea turtles nest. Several Florida universities teach ecology and biology courses on sea turtles. The Florida Sea Turtle License Plate provides funding for Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sea turtle program and the platesâ grant program funds conservation, education, and research grants for qualifying non-profit organizations and county governments.
In the diving industry, PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) offers a Sea Turtle Awareness program where divers learn about and observe sea turtles in their inwater habitat. Programs like these are popular in other destinations in and around Florida where the number of turtles has increased so that the likelihood of encountering them is more consistent. Tour de Turtles (https://âtourdeturtles.âorg/â) sponsored by the Sea Turtle Conservancy is held every year in Brevard County. Thousands of tourists and local people of all ages come out to watch the release of sea turtles that have been fitted with satellite tracking devices. Location data from the satellite tracking tags allow people all over the world to see where turtles go via websites of downloaded satellite data. These and other events bring whole communities together and spark compassion about protecting sea turtles and their habitats in the region and throughout the world since many species are now known to extend their range well-beyond national boundaries.
