The easiest form of work to understand is mechanical work. Imagine a large stone block destined for a pharaoh’s tomb being dragged by a gang of workers (Figure 11.16). The force the workers apply to the rope causes the stone block to slowly move. The more force they apply and the farther they drag it, the more work they do. This can be stated mathematically as
