Many of these deceitful sorts run far outside believers’ circles, but Jesus’ frank assessments of the inward condition of many religious people also serves as fair warning. In Luke 20:46, Jesus advised wariness of even the religious elite, those who loved to fashion themselves in the respected robes of the pious. In verse 27, Jesus rose to the defense of women when He charged that these men devour the houses of widows. Jesus alerted that false prophets (those who claim to represent God but don’t) were like wolves in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15).

Long ago, our Good Shepherd said He was sending us out as lambs in the midst of wolves (Luke 10:3). The problem is, wolves don’t always look like wolves—at least at first and sometimes for a very long while. They may be covered in fleece. The Bible cautions us to be wary of these deceivers. Paul warned that it should be no surprise to us if even Satan disguised himself as an angel of light (II Corinthians 11:14).

These men who claim to represent God but don’t are practiced in cunningly costuming themselves as sheep. They may look and talk like the redeemed, but all the while they stalk and win a woman’s heart. They carefully conceal what they really are, often until it’s too late. It’s not at all unusual for a wolf to keep up sheep-like appearances throughout dating and engagement, then to drop his mask on an unsuspecting bride, only after the wedding has buttoned up her commitment.

It’s not that I’m trying to scare you. Instead, what I’m encouraging you to do is to be discerning. Listen to what your Father says through His Word. These sometimes hard-to-hear truths can help you look beyond slick exteriors to the true heart of that man you’re considering, even if he claims to be among the fold.
