1. Two of the more troubling signs I’ve seen are a red, white, and blue T-shirt that says “jesUSAves” (Jesus Saves, emphasis on the USA), and a new line of old-school Christian fish symbols you can put on your car, but instead of “Jesus” in the middle of the fish, it has “Bush.” Truth is stranger than fiction: see www.bushfish.org.

2. Dozens of us gathered around Scripture for studies that we called Kingdom Night, seeking to understand how to pledge allegiance when our kingdoms collide.

3. And I saw another sign that the “b” had fallen off of so it just said “God less America.” I guess they had another audience in mind. Ha!

4. Martin Luther King Jr., “A Time to Break the Silence” (speech, meeting of clergy and laity concerned about Vietnam, Riverside Church, New York, April 4, 1967).

9. The statement is included in appendix 2. And my full journal from Iraq can be read and copied from our website, www.thesimpleway.org.

10. In fact, the Iraqi population is very young. UNICEF reports that nearly half of the population is under the age of twenty.

11. To be honest, we were both scared out of our minds, but we each wanted to ensure that the other would not start weeping again.

12. John Howard Yoder, The Politics of Jesus (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1972).

13. In fact, he helped me edit this book, making sure I’m not just preaching to the choir. After reading the manuscript, he sent me an e-mail saying he is torn by his military duties, as he is a highly respected soldier, and he’s not sure what to do next.

14. I just met with a Methodist conference and heard bishops voice their deep concern for the Christian identity and the Methodist tradition in particular (since the president professes Methodist faith). In line with Matthew 18:15–20, they have asked to meet with the president and have sent him a letter to express grave concern, declaring that what is being done in Iraq is not Wesley’s teaching, Methodist theology, or just-war practice. These are tremendous signs of hope.
