Chapter Nine

The kiss was a whispered touch against his lips, repeated twice more. Cal stood perfectly still, needing to wrap his mind around what he was allowing to happen but not wanting to break the spell. The scent of the man whose lips brushed against his with such silent hunger filled his nostrils, a heady aroma that twisted him in knots of desire so powerful he trembled with it. He wanted to return the butterfly caresses, but he was frozen in place. He wasn’t gay. He had never in his life before been this up close and personal with another man. He should be horrified…but he wasn’t. He was just confused, and so turned on he didn’t know how much longer he could stop himself from giving as good as he was getting.

“Cal…”

Ben’s breath wafted over his lips, the scent of beer adding to his sensual overload. His hands held Cal’s shoulders firmly, the space between them enough that Cal could slide his own up Ben’s chest to his throat. He stopped when he realized what he was doing, and tried to pull his hand away, but Ben held it there, flat against his chest just at his collar bones.

“You’re trembling,” he said, pressing his own hand firmly against Cal’s.

He stepped away a moment later, releasing Cal and turning away from him, and Cal felt the loss keenly. It was a cold, sharp loss, and he hated it. He reached for Ben, speaking without thought.

“I…I’m sorry, Ben. I don’t know what to say.”

Ben inhaled deeply before turning back to face him. “I’m the one who should apologize,” he said. “I let myself forget that you’re not…”

He stopped speaking and stared at Cal for a long, agonizing moment. Cal wished he knew what was going through Ben’s mind, because he could tell Ben was thinking hard about what had just happened.

“I’m really sorry,” Ben said eventually, bringing Cal’s focus back to the man standing in front of him. “Please forgive me.” He looked down for a moment, then looked up one last time. “You should probably go now. I have some work to do on the pieces that I started for the project. I’ll bring them to the site when they’re ready to be installed so you won’t have to come out here again.”

Cal wasn’t ready to be dismissed. When Ben walked over to the open door, waiting to show him out, Cal spoke.

“Why me?”

He hadn’t moved from where he was leaning against Ben’s desk as if rooted to the spot. He knew what he was hoping, even if he didn’t know what Ben was thinking. He hoped that Ben would always associate that spot up against his desk with the place he’d temporarily lost control and kissed a straight guy on the mouth. He wanted him to remember it forever. He watched Ben’s face as he tried to process the question. What did he expect Ben to say in answer to that? What if he didn’t know why? Why the hell does it matter to me so much? Maybe Ben was asking himself the same question.
